High school seniors across Kentucky are now receiving Financial Aid Award letters from the colleges they have applied to.  As parents and seniors look for the best Financial Aid package, remember to look for not only “how much” Financial Aid is being offered, but “what kind”.  $10,000 in scholarships at an expensive school is a better offer than $10,000 in student loan debt from a less expensive school.  Please examine award letters carefully.  This “Financial Aid Tip of the Month” is from the KY Higher Education Assistance Authority.

Everyone is invited to attend Revival Services at Soul’s Harbor Baptist Church, located at 1105 W. The MLK Relay for Life Team is having a “Jamberry Nails” fundraiser.  Each sheet of wraps will do at least two manicures and two pedicures.  They last up to two weeks on the hands and 6-8 weeks on the toes.  Cost is $20 per sheet.  Order and money deadline is April 24th.  For more information, please contact Kristen Haley at 270-887-7310.

Topic:  The U.S. Supreme Court

 

On April 28th, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on two questions related to marriage.  Question #1:  Whether State laws defining marriage as the relationship between one man and one woman are unconstitutional.  Question #2:  Whether States that define marriage as a relationship between a man and a woman have to give legal recognition to a marriage between two people of the same sex when the marriage was performed in another state.  Please pray now through April 28th.  On Sunday, April 26th, churches across the Nation are urged to set aside time during services for corporate prayer.  On Tuesday, April 28th, if possible, pray at 10:00 EDT for the judges and lawyers when the oral arguments begin.

Topic:  Sidewalk Upgrades

 

A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has started sidewalk upgrade work along Skyline Drive from Ft. Campbell Blvd. to East 9th St. (Pembroke Rd.) in Hopkinsville, KY.  Sometime in mid-April, the contractor plans to begin milling and asphalt paving along this same section.  Motorists should be alert for lane restrictions and equipment, flaggers, and construction personnel along the roadway in close proximity to traffic flow.

Topic:  “Ready Reader Road Rally”

 

The Christian County Literacy Council is hosting a “Ready Reader Road Rally” on Saturday, April 18th, at 9:30 a.m., at the Hopkinsville Municipal Building, located at South Virginia St. in downtown Hopkinsville, KY.  It’s a competition and treasure hunt.  Participating teams will be given clues to locate sites by car throughout Christian County or by foot in downtown Hopkinsville.  The first two teams to return with stamped passports and digital photos will receive monetary prizes.  The registration fee is $40 before the rally day and $50 the day of the rally.  The fee is non-refundable and tax-deductible.  To register, call 270-962-7114.

Mt. Topic:  The 64th National Day of Prayer

 

May 7th is the 64th National Day of Prayer.  This year’s theme is “Lord, Hear our Cry”.  There will be a community observance held at Second Baptist Church, 720 W. 7th Street in Hopkinsville, KY.  The service will begin at noon on Thursday, May 7th, and will last about 45 minutes.  A sack lunch will be provided for all that attend.  This service will feature special music, local pastors, and community leaders leading in prayer for our Government, Military, schools, and families.  The public is cordially invited and encouraged to come.

The Christian County School System’s preschool screening will be held Friday, May 1st, and Friday, May 15th, for children who reside in Christian County.  The screening will be held at the Christian County Board of Education and Christian County High School (the old Christian County Middle School) in Hopkinsville, KY.  Children, who will be three years of age by April 1, 2015 or will be four by August 1, 2015 and reside in Christian County, will be eligible for the screening in areas of vision, hearing, speech/language, motor, and concept development.  If you are interested in your child participating, please call 270-887-7004 to schedule an appointment.

Topic:  “Hopkinsville Marathon for Hope” 5K Run/Walk

 

 

The Aaron McNeil House is partnering with Elite Era Entertainment to host the “Hopkinsville Marathon for Hope” 5K Run/Walk.  Children and seniors can choose to run a modified course.  Fifty percent of the proceeds will go to benefit the Aaron McNeil House Crisis Relief/Food Pantry Program.  This 5K will be held on April 18th at 9:00 a.m. Registration fee is $25 for adults and $15 for children and seniors 65 or over.  Parent may run with child at no additional cost.
