Under the Same Old Management

Have you ever seen a business that puts up a sign stating “Now Under New Management”?   The new management wants you to know that the food, or hardware, or service is better than it was before. Sometimes it means the new people just want to be recognized.  But, in the case of your Christian radio station, that’s not the way things work.

With WNKJ, we hope and pray there will never be a change of management.  We are committed to the Same (yesterday, today, and forever) Old (Ancient of Days) Management (King of kings and Lord of lords).  While faces may change from time to time, the Lord Jesus Christ should always be the One Who manages the direction and the focus of WNKJ.  Both the strategy and the tactics of WNKJ should be based on what Jesus has said in His written Word.

The reason I bring up this subject is that, as of this writing, our Director and President of the PCC board, Billy Russell, is in the hospital recovering from surgery.  He had been feeling ill for some time, so finally was admitted for tests.  Those tests found a tumor which needed to be removed.  The surgery on Jan. 16 was successful, but the recovery will take some time.  Please pray for Billy.  We all miss his infectious laugh, as well as his spiritual leadership and insight.  The doctors will try to determine the best course to get him back to full health and strength, but the best thing for Billy is for God to hear our prayers on his behalf.  And, while you’re praying for Billy, please pray for me and the rest of the PCC board.  In his absence, I have been chosen by the PCC board to fill in as President.  The other board members have also agreed to pitch in and help.

Thank you all for your generosity and thoughtfulness toward WNKJ.  Even when we see different faces at the board meetings, we are committed to operating under the Same Old Management, because the World still Needs King Jesus.  God bless you all.

(“Same Old”) Manager’s Musings

Our Care-a-thon total as of December 31, 2008, is right at $205,000, not quite two-thirds of our budgeted need for the coming year - and there are still a few Faith Pledges coming in!  Thank you!!  We had lots of fun back at Care-a thon, and want to thank all our volunteer workers, food donors, and visitors, as well as our Listening Family members who called or wrote with their Faith Pledges.  Don’t fret about the total; we reached over 1/3 of goal during the “on air” part of Care-a-thon, which is, as Uncle Elmer would say, not too bad, considering the financial upset the nation is going through.  We know there are those who, for various reasons, don’t make pledges but give anyway.  Faith Pledges help us to plan better; but we know that the sustaining of WNKJ depends on God’s provision through our Listening Family, and all our futures are in God’s hands, no matter what the economy does.

However, it’s not too late to make a Faith Pledge, if you are so inclined!

There’s no question that 2008 has been an eventful year for WNKJ with Billy’s surgery, my surgery, Kathy’s passing, and the birth of several grandchildren to staff members.  Oh, yes, and there was a Presidential Election - and Congressional, and state and local elections, too.

We now have a new President for at least the next four years.  He may or may not be the one you wanted or voted for; but Barak Obama is our President, and we are commanded in Scripture to pray for him – and all others in authority (and if he’s not your choice, might that not be even more incentive?).

Shifting gears, we send out Faith Pledge Acknowledgement Letters in part to correct human errors – and we did make a few.  Thanks for understanding and not getting mad – and speaking of acknowledgements, we owe special thanks to the donor of several pizzas on Saturday night of Care-a-thon, and to the Smileys for their gift of sandwiches from Arbys.

Christmas Open House

The Christmas Open House was once again a delightful time. Our thanks to the individuals and groups who made Sunday, December 7th, such a joyous occasion: the Hopkinsville Minstrels, the United Korean Church Choir, the Choir from New Hope Presbyterian Church, Becky Jent, the Wilsons, Edye Tunstall, and our good friend and Board President Billy Russell for closing us in prayer (He was offered the opportunity to sing, but declined).

Moody Bible Institute’s Annual Founder’s Week is coming February, with another impressive lineup of speakers. WNKJ will be carrying the messages MBI selects for broadcast on their network at 8 PM Tuesday, February 3 – Friday, February 6, so let’s all get ready for a “Bible Conference in the Home” (or car, or desk, depending on your circumstances).

Item for Prayer

As some of our Listening Family are aware, we have been awarded a Construction Permit to build an FM station in Madisonville (tower in Hanson) on 91.7, which will replace our translator there. There are lots of details to be settled in connection with this, not the least of which is funding, so please make this an item of regular prayer – particularly that we would be sensitive to our Lord’s guiding, and that He would lead us to the right sources for the equipment and information we need. The FCC gives us up to three years to get the station on the air, and we have about two and a half left.
